The Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje is the first state University in the Republic of Macedonia, founded in 1949. At the moment, the University represents a functional community of 23 faculties, 5 research institutes and 11 accompanying members. Its activities are stipulated by the Law on Higher Education and the Statute of the University. The Medical Faculty has long-term tradition in education of students from diverse cultures that possess the individual qualities and academic skills that will enable them to establish a successful career in the fields of medicine and health care. Department of Nephrology is a part of the Medical Faculty with its long-lasting research tradition in many fields of nephrology. The researchers from this centre of Excellency in the country have published papers in many international well recognised journals from many successfully completed clinical projects. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) progression is currently a topic with majority of ongoing projects. The basis for research activity within the country is represented by the Research Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology.
Prof. Dr. Goce Spasovski - nephrologist is principal investigator of several clinical studies for CKD progression and current FP7 ongoing project in diabetic patients with associated nephropathy. He has received his doctoral thesis from Univeristy of Skopje and Antwerp. He has more than 15 years experience in clinical research, CKD mineral and bone disorders, uremic toxins, urinary proteomics, kidney transplantation and system biology. He was a member of the Management Committee and WG1 group leader of the European Kidney and Urine Proteomics COST Action (www.eurokup.org; 2008-2012). Prof. Spasovski is also a partner in the FP7 PRIORITY study. He will be the main supervisor of ESR1.
Acad. Momir Polenakovic, is the current head of the Research Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology. He is an emeritus with well recognised international background of previous cooperation and scientific achievements. His research interest is in vascular biology, rare diseases, diabetic nephropathy and various biomarkers of cardiovascular disease with a particular interest in systems medicine approaches.
