My current research interest focus on the use of Systems Biology approaches, applying existing and emerging Bioinformatics tools, in order to integrate large high-throughput datasets derived from multi-omics studies. This type of studies are commonly driven by a hypothesis-free approach relying on the discovery of frequent patterns and trends in large datasets and ultimately giving a biological meaning to the information.
In the past, I was introduced to the field of Proteomics research, where I had the opportunity to put my hands on several methodologies for protein separation such as one-dimensional gel electrophoresis (1-DE) and two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) followed by a step of identification and quantitation through mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF/TOF tandem MS) and a subsequent step of validation using Western blotting. I also used an alternative methodology to label-free approaches, such as the isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ), which as the advantage of enabling the simultaneous analysis of up-to 8 samples in just one run and thus removing the bias associated with sample complexity and independent runs.
